Thankful for His Mercy

A look, including the comparison, contrast, and conclusion, at the two types of lepers in Luke chapter 17.

Luke 17:11-19 (ESV): On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

The Authority of God

Fall Gospel Meeting with Albert Dickson

Authority and the Need for It

Matthew 21:23 (ESV): And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”

The Authoritative Word of God

Hebrews 1:1-2 (ESV): Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

The Two Sources of Authority

Matthew 21:23 (ESV): And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”

Determining Bible Authority – Generic & Specific Commands

Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV): Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

The Authority of God and Expediency

John 16:5-11 (ESV): Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

The Authority of God’s Silence

Exodus 14:13-14 (ESV): And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

Do You Believe God Enough to Obey?

Bill Nichols asks us to examine our belief in God. Faith requires obedience. When Moses disobeyed God and struck the rock rather than speaking to it (as recorded in Numbers 20), he was reprimanded for not believing or trusting God enough to obey. What kind of faith do we have? Do we believe God enough to obey His Word?

Numbers 20:11-12 (ESV): And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”
